Health Canada Approves Vaccine to Prevent Cervical Cancer According to a CP story carried by CBC.ca, Health Canada has just approved a vaccine to protect women against the sexually transmitted virus that causes most cases of cervical cancer. The vaccine is called Gardasil and is sold by Merck Frosst Canada. Gardasil was approved by the U.S. FDA on June 8, 2006. It has been shown to be effective against infection from four strains of human papillomavirus which cause about 70% of cases of cervical cancer as well as other instances of cancer of the vulva and vagina. Initial approval for vacinnation is for females 9-26. Effectiveness for older women as well as men is being studied. The cost will be $135 per dose and three doses over a six-month period will be required. Currently provincial health plans do not cover the vaccine, but that may change within the next year if a review of the test results for the vaccine turns out to be positive Worldwide about 250,000 women die each year from cervical cancer -- about 400 in Canada. |
